Nigeria to boost school security after deadly attack

Authorities in Nigeria say there was no security protection at an agricultural college where up to 50 students were shot dead as they slept on Sunday.

 The students were killed by suspected Islamist gunmen in their dormitory in Yobe state, north-eastern Nigeria.

Official Abdullahi Bego told the BBC the government and military would work to increase protection in schools.

North-eastern Nigeria is under a state of emergency amid an Islamist insurgency by the Boko Haram group.

Boko Haram is fighting to overthrow Nigeria’s government to create an Islamic state, and has launched a number of attacks on schools.

Queen Elizabeth II – Suspected Burglar Arrested At Buckingham Palace

A suspected burglar has been arrested after allegedly breaking into Queen Elizabeth Ii’s official London residence Buckingham Palace.
The unnamed man was detained on suspicion of burglary, trespass and criminal damage after allegedly scaling a fence and breaking in to the palace late on Monday (02Sep13).
A second suspect was also detained outside the building on suspicion of conspiracy to commit burglary.
No members of the royal family were at home at the time of the incident, and a review of security procedures has now been launched.
A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police says, “Both men have been bailed to return to a central London police station and enquiries continue. A review of the specific circumstances of this incident is being carried out. No members of the Royal Family were at Buckingham Palace at the time of the incident.”
The break-in is said to be the most serious breach of security since 1982 when a man was arrested after entering the palace and making his way into the Queen’s bedroom while she was asleep.

Randy Jackson Wants Paris Released From Treatment

Michael Jackson‘s brother Randy has called for the late superstar’s daughter Paris to be released from psychiatric care as he fears the teenager has been held by doctors for too long.

The King of Pop’s only daughter was hospitalised in Los Angeles on 5 June (13) and spent several weeks at the UCLA Medical Center after she allegedly attempted to take her own life.

She was discharged in July (13), but was moved to a residential treatment centre instead of returning to the Jackson family compound in California.

Paris’ uncle, Jackson 5 star Randy, has now voiced his concerns for the 15 year old’s well-being, as he is afraid such a long stay in hospital will actually worsen her mental health.

He tweets, “I don’t like that Paris is still in this facility. It’s not right. She’s been there much too long. She is not psychotic. There is no reason for her to be in a psychiatric hospital this long away from her family. I just hate the fact that you will probably still be there on my brother’s birthday (29Aug13). This is not good. There’s something more to this, there’s something going on I don’t like it I’m afraid for her.

“Psychiatric hospitals often… make you feel as though you’re psychotic when you’re not. Sometimes they make matters worse. I’m going to look into this. Stay tuned.”

Demi Lovato Lands Glee Role Only To Be Promptly Dogged By ‘Nude Pics’ Scandal

The X Factor judge proudly announced her upcoming appearance on the musical-comedy, only to be met with rumours that her phone has been hacked and nude photos were stolen from it

 Demi Lovato will continue her good relationship with Fox this fall when she appears in the network’s hit show Glee as part of a six-episode (with the potential for more) story arc. Unfortunately for the X Factor judge however, the news that she will be joining with the hit show has been overshadowed somewhat by the recent rumour that the star had her phone hacked, with the hacker finding and willing to sell nude photos of the star.

 

TV Line first revealed that Lovato will be appearing as Dani, a friend of Rachel and Santana who the pair know from their time in New York, on Monday (19 August). The star, who turns twenty-one today (20 August), will also feature with fellow guest-star Adam Lambert throughout her run on the show, and will feature in a number of duets together with the American Idol contestant. The news that she will be returning to acting – her first time since the Disney series Sonny With A Chance ended two years ago – was greatly overshadowed however, when Radar Online claimed to have been offered nude photos of the star for a nominal fee later the same day.

The website claim to have been offered photographs featuring a woman who looks identical to Lovato, tattoos and all, in a variety of compromising, clothes-less positions. The site chose not to publish the photos, although the alleged hacker is expected to attempt to sell his/her wares to another potential buyer.

The rumoured pics couldn’t really have come at a worse time, and may not only go on to compromise her role on Glee, but may also greatly affect her position on Fox’s other hit show; The X Factor. With the series nearing the airing of it’s next season, and with star judge and series creator Simon Cowell rocked by the news that he has fathered a child with a married woman, Lovato’s scandal may prove to be a fatal blow in the running and the success of the series.

 

Naomi Watts “Felt Princess Diana’s Presence” On Set

Actress Naomi Watts was so determined to channel the spirit of Diana, Princess Of Wales while shooting a new biopic, she was convinced she felt the tragic royal’s presence on set.

The actress plays the late British icon in Oliver Hirschbiegel’s upcoming movie Diana, which details the final years of the princess’ life prior to her death in a car crash in Paris, France in 1997.

Watts has already wowed critics with her haunting resemblance to Diana in the film, and now she has revealed she was so convinced the royal was watching over her, she would consult her over each scene.

The actress tells British magazine Event, “There were definitely moments when I felt Diana’s presence – I dreamed about her a lot, too, and that’s a first. I kept wondering to myself: ‘Would she have liked it?’

“So I found myself constantly asking for her permission to carry on. I had saturated myself with Diana and her life and I felt this enormous responsibility of playing this iconic woman. It felt like I was spending a lot of time with her. There was one particular moment when I felt her permission was granted. That won’t sound right in print, I know.”

Adrien Brody Lands Harry Houdini Role For History Channel

Oscar winner Adrien Brody will be making magic on the small screen in a new mini-series about legendary illusionist Harry Houdini.

The Piano star will play the master magician, who wowed crowds around the world with his death-defying escapes at the beginning of the 20th Century, in a new project for the History Channel.

It will focus on how the American-Hungarian performer overcame an impoverished backgroundto become an international sensation, famed for escaping from handcuffs and straitjackets under water.

House of Cards star Kristen Connolly will play Houdini’s wife Bess in the four-part series, which will begin filming later this year (13).

Tony Curtis, Harvey Keitel and Guy Pearce have all played the enigmatic escapologist before.

 

Dick Van Dyke’s Jaguar Explodes Into Flames, Actor Pulled To Safety

Dick Van Dyke was rescued by a passerby.

Dick Van Dyke’s Jaguar burst into flames on the Los Angeles freeway on Monday evening (August 19, 2013), leaving the legendary 87-year-old narrowly avoiding disaster. 

According to TMZ.com, a guy named Jason Pennington was driving along the 101 when he saw a car full of smoke on the side of the road with an elderly man hunched over the wheel. Pennington pulled over, ran up to the car and found Van Dyke struggling inside.

The hero opened the driver door and pulled the actor out of the vehicle as flames began to tear through the engine. Dick was understandably disorientated, though he didn’t require medical attention and was fine soon after. In fact, his wife came to pick him up and the pair cruised home together. 

It wasn’t such great news for the swish Jaguar, which is well and truly toast.

Van Dyke, who starred in Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, is prone to being saved by unlikely heroes. In 2010, he recalled falling asleep on a surf board and drifting out so far to sea that he could no longer see the beach when he awoke.

“I woke up out of sight of land … and I started paddling with the swells and I started seeing fins swimming around me and I thought, ‘I’m dead!'”, he said.

Fortunately for the Hollywood veteran, help was at hand – though it wasn’t the lifeguards or sea police. 

“They turned out to be porpoises,” he said of his saviours, “they pushed me all the way to shore. I’m not kidding.”

‘Rizzoli & Isles’ star Lee Thompson Young dead at 29

Lee Thompson Young, who starred in Disney’s “The Famous Jett Jackson” and most-recently in TNT’s “Rizzoli & Isles,” committed suicide, his manager told FOX411. He was 29.

Young’s body was discovered by his landlord, according to TMZ, after his co-stars from “Rizzoli & Isles” requested someone check in on the actor when he did not show up for work. 

“Everyone at Rizzoli & Isles is devastated by the news of the passing of Lee Thompson Young,” a rep for the show said in statement. “We are beyond heartbroken at the loss of this sweet, gentle, good-hearted, intelligent man. He was truly a member of our family. Lee will be cherished and remembered by all who knew and loved him, both on- and off screen, for his positive energy, infectious smile and soulful grace. We send our deepest condolences and thoughts to his family, to his friends and, most especially, to his beloved mother.”

Law enforcement officials told FOX411 they could not yet comment on Young’s death. 

“It is with great sadness that I announce that Lee Thompson Young tragically took his own life this morning,” longtime manager Jonathan Baruch said in a statement. “Lee was more than just a brilliant young actor, he was a wonderful and gentle soul who will be truly missed. We ask that you please respect the privacy of his family and friends as this very difficult time.”

The South Carolina native got his big break when he starred as the title character in “The Famous Jett Jackson” from 1998 to 2001. He then appeared in the Disney flick “Johnny Tsunami.”

Young also appeared on the TV shows “Smallville” and “Scrubs.”

He played detective Barry Frost on “Rizzoli & Isles.”

Kate middleton delivers a baby boy!

Kate Middleton and Prince William are parents to a baby boy!

The Duchess of Cambridge gave birth to the couple’s first child together today at St. Mary’s Hospital in London.

A royal aide announced the good news with a proclamation signed by the doctors who delivered the wee HRH Prince of Cambridge.

Kensington Palace announced that the couple’s firstborn weighed in at 8 lbs 6 oz. and arrived at 4:24 p.m. local time.

“Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well and will remain in hospital overnight,” a statement read.

A Buckingham Palace spokesman said: “The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh are delighted at the news.”

Middleton arrived at the hospital at 6 a.m. local time after going into labor. She was joined by her hubby, who was by her side for every step of the way. The two entered the hospital through a side door and were driven from Kensington Palace via a two-car convoy. 

The palace announced that it was making a last minute change to the birth announcement plans. Traditionally, news of the arrival was posted on an easel by a palace aide—the same easel used when William was born 31 years ago—just inside the front gates for the press. This time, however, a formal announcement was made prior to the formal signed bulletin being posted on display.

The notice will still be seen and remain on the easel for 24 hours before it is sent to the Privy Council (the queen’s formal body of advisors, made up of members of parliament). 

Kate and Will’s baby is the first grandchild of Prince Charles and he or she is Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip’s third great-grandchild.

On what happened to be Kate’s 31st birthday this year, the queen paved the way for the child to have an equal shot at a title regardless of gender with a Letters Patent stating: “All the children of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales should enjoy the style, title and attribute of Royal Highness with the titular dignity of Prince or Princess prefixed to their Christian names.”

The decree overturned the previous rule set in place by Elizabeth’s grandfather, King George V, that would have prevented a daughter—even a firstborn one—from being a princess.

Kate gave birth in a private suite in St. Mary’s exclusive Lindo Wing, the same place where Princess Diana had Will and Harry.

It’s highly likely that the first glimpse the world gets of Kate and Will’s baby will be right outside the hospital, which is where Will also made his debut in his mother’s arms.

The press have a specially designated area to wait it out—which they may be doing until the entire family of three head for home.
