The J.J. Abrams sci-fi sequel rocked this weekend’s box office, landing in the top spot with $70.6 million.
Although the film fell short of expectations of a $90 million plus weekend, it did manage to end Iron Man 3‘s three-week reign at No.1, pushing the action flick to the second spot at $35.2 million.
And in spite of a lower box office total, Iron Man 3 is still doing phenomenal, considering it has officially passed the billion-dollar worldwide mark.
So well, that it has become the second highest-grossing comic book film of all time, preceded by The Avengers.
Meanwhile, The Great Gatsby and Pain & Gain followed in the fourth and fifth spots with $23.4 million and $3.1 million respectively.
